Sunday Prototype – 1/27/13 – Skinth OD Green Mondo Shield

$

Again, we’ve been working hard to pump out as many Skinths as we can this week to get back to normal after the holiday bashing we experienced. Best problem to have we say!

This week we are revisiting the Shields again, but in a color that you’ve probably never seen. Here’s our biggest Shield, the Mondo in a cool OD Green.

DSC_0066

Loaded up, the Mondo Shield still only take up the space of a large pack of playing cards.

DSC_0060

Like it’s smaller brothers, the heart of the Mondo-Shield holds a large multitool, in this case, a Leatherman Surge. Hanging on the outside is a Spyderco Native 5.

DSC_0062

Accompanying the Surge, is a Titaner Toothpick/Pill holder, Big I Design XTS Titanium Pen, Ultrafire A3R5 AAA Flshlight, Moleskine Volant XS and a bunch of Skinth business cards.
DSC_0063

That pretty much covers your everyday carry for note taking, cutting, fixing, adjusting, improvising, breaking and even your headache problems.

Skinth YEAR ONE Anniversary News, PentaPocket.

Feburary 1st, 2013 marks our first anniversary Skinth Solutions. Since our humble beginnings, we’ve launched the Sunday Prototype Program, constant customization optimization and ever evolving product line.

To celebrate our Year One, we’ve decided to incorporate our popular PentaPocket organization system into ALL custom Skinths.

Why?

Well, we took a look at how we made Skinths and we decided that it was time to look at our core methodology. The soul of Skinth is the simplicity of design, using CORDURA nylon and modular panel construction. We extended this and developed a way to incorporate the PentaPocket with LESS work than adding a separate piece, reducing our part count from 5 to 3.

Less parts means less hems and more strength.

We are proud to announce that the PentaPocket is now a standard feature, while keeping the price the same. To illustrate the new PentaPocket, here’s a couple of shots of a Skinth MilkyWay.

DSC_0069

Adding the PentaPocket (the 5 smaller pockets comprising the main body) integrally, Skinths are packed with gadget and tool organization.

DSC_0070

Using the natural pocket forming properties of strategically placed hems on an accordion folded strip of CORDURA, Skinths are even stronger than before.

DSC_0071

As demonstrated on this Coyote Brown Skinth OG, the PentaPocket is ready to swallow up Leatherman bit cards without the awkward pull on the main flap.
DSC_0074

It’s been a WILD year full of ups, downs, backslides and forward jumps, can’t wait to see what is in store for the years ahead. -Eric , Principal Designer

Sunday Prototype – 02/10/13 – Smoke Mondo-Shield

Finally, we are on more of a normal schedule after the mad holiday rush. Being a bespoke products company, we spend a lot of time tailoring each product that leaves our door to the customer. We try to add a little touch of customization to each one even if it’s just a standard product.

When this Skinth user ordered his Mondo-Shield he reached out to us and cried for help. Our normal belt clips for Skinth Shields are sized for 1.75″ and are very compact, his much thicker 1.5″ bull hide belt clip wouldn’t fit this.

No problem.

We went into our storage area and found some 1.5″, thick aperture clips and installed one for him. While were at it, he wanted us to use orange stitching.

DSC_0023

Normally, a pocket is formed by a triple layer of CORDURA sewn into a rectangle. In order to install the shorter, thicker belt clip, we use the same technique that we use to install belt clips on our custom Skinths. A double stitched 1.5″ wide slab of nigh density webbing.

DSC_0025

The orange stitching is always a challenge, contrasting colours demand much more attention than standard matching thread. We rose to the occasion.

DSC_0026

Inside is a typical Mondo-Shield load out.
DSC_0027

A couple of credit and business cards, a Moleskine Volant XS notebook, a BigIdeaDesign XTS Ti pen, Leatherman Supertool 300 BO, stubby Sharpie marker, 4″ crescent wrench.
DSC_0028

DSC_0029

That’s all for this week. Going to be working hard to get more product out the door and as soon as we have more time on our hands, more custom products too!

Stay tuned!

Sunday Prototype – 02/17/13 – Navy Skinth Jotter

Been really busy this week getting stuff out the door. More so than any other week. We had a very pleasant request for a Navy Skinth Jotter and we think it’s very fetching. DSC_0034

A couple of front elastic webbing bands hold smaller items like pocket lights, USB drives and even small knives.

DSC_0030

The rear full length elastic webbing bands can hold wider folding knives, multitools, pens and pencils. The parallel bands also allow for smaller item to be stored.
DSC_0032

Of course, at the core of the Jotter is a Moleskine pocket notebook. The Jotter will also hold up to 3 Cahier note books or anything in similar sized items. Works great for thin laptop drives as well. DSC_0033

Sunday Prototype – 02/24/14 – The Skinth Mean Green Machine

This week we are showcasing a battle tested Skinth. Already seen a week of use, the Skinth Mean Green Machine was used to transform a benign space into a one huge party environment.

DSC_0115

When the call came to make Skinth to carry a couple odd sized objects we got to looking at our patterns to see what we could do. The Skinth MGM is a modified Skinth Catch All with a few features that we think are pretty snazzy.

DSC_0117

Shortening the front flap of the Catch All, we could install some elastic webbing on the front for a utility knife.

DSC_0118

We are never one to waste space so remaining space on the front flap was perfect for a row of elastic webbing for markers and pencils.
DSC_0119

The MGM, at 4.5″ wide, a double belt loop for stability and weight bearing was installed. A couple of smaller tubes allow for a small AAA flashlight and a compact folding hack saw.

DSC_0120

In the side tubes, a BO Leatherman Wave and a folding utility knife. In the heart of the MGM is a compact 16 ft measuring tape. Unseen here is a bundle of nitrile gloves and some replacement utility blades.

DSC_0121

Backed by our PentaPocket, the side tubes are supported by a smoke Piranha tool and a single Leatherman bit card.

That’s all for this week!

Stay tuned for a mid week post about some exciting ‘bright’ news!

Sunday Prototype – 03/03/13 – Navy Skinth Command Post.

This week we are dipping into our regular round of production again, showcasing a colour not seen on a Command Post. Navy blue has been a very popular choice these months due to the infusion of the Gentleman Skinth series and the general muteness of the Navy without being the generic Black colour.

DSC_7462

The Navy blue Command Post is exactly what we offer as standard options on all custom Skinths. 1000D CORDURA, T70 nylon thread, Hook and Loop Closure and our PentaPocket organization system.
DSC_7463

With two slimmer pen slots and one larger .80″ flashlight tube, the Command Post’s standard features allow the users to carry a lot of stuff without it being out of reach.
DSC_7461

Designed around a 3″x5″ top coil notebook, the Command Post is a favourite for those who want to keep their analog note taking as quick as their digital. Some users have even switched out the positions and put their smart phones in the notebook slot and the notebook in the phone cavity.

DSC_7464

To order your custom Skinth Command Post.

Don’t forget, all orders in March will be entered in our March Madness contest to win 1 of 7 Thrunite Ti, AAA flashlights. They fit perfectly in our L, XL, 2xl, Mondo Shields and Skinth OGs.

Sunday Prototype – 03/10/12 – Skinth M81 Woodland Catch-All

This week we are showing another production model color that doesn’t get enough face time. Woodland Camo was introduced in 1981. It’s random pattern of earthtones are one of the most common patterns used in military clothing. Since it was discontinued in 2006 as the official pattern of the US Army & Navy, huge lots of surplus equipment and clothing still sport this type of camouflage.

The Skinth Catch-All is the largest model we make, hosting a variety of pockets, dividers and slots to ‘Catch it All’.

DSC_7474

This particular model is heading to a solider deployed overseas who already enjoys a Coyote Brown Skinth OG. He wanted something to go camping and keep all his tools in one place.

DSC_7467

This Catch All’s outside access straps are perfect for a couple of pens and even a fatter folding knife.

DSC_7469

Since the Catch-All is so big, we recently added a second belt clip to the package to distribute the load better.

DSC_7471

A Spyderco Jason Breeden Rescue Knife (Cerakoted by 4bush), Leatheman Charge TTi, Ultrafire flashlight and a Sharpie marker fill the outside areas.

DSC_7475

Inside, a popular bushcraft items, an Altoids tin, Leatherman bit holder, Leatherman Piranha tool and a Rite in the Rain 3×5 note pad.
DSC_7473

The Catch All certain gets heavy very quickly but there is no way we would go into a complicated job without one to have all of our tools and note taking  stuff in one place.

This week we are taking a peek at another color rarely seen on ANY Skinth, let alone a Skinth Shield! This royal blue Skinth XL is just flashy enough to attract the right kind of attention.

DSC_7514

As with all Skinth Shields, a 1.75″, super tough, super slim belt clip allows it to be put on a belt and taken off a belt with ease, while staying put when worn.

DSC_7516

Dual buttons snaps hold back the monster tool, the Leatherman Surge. In the slim side pocket, a small stubby Sharpie marker is ready to write on anything.

DSC_7517

Happily nested inside, the Surge and his bit driver buddies are ready to take apart, put together and just make life easier to maintain.

DSC_7518

DSC_7519

That’s all for now, we are going back to the machines and hitting them hard this week. Trying to get back to our comfortable level of output.

The Skinth Shields are getting a lot traction since they were released a few short months ago. Their simple design, effective pocket selection and tailored fit are an idea solution for carrying enough tools to get the job done.

This week, a trio of Smoke coloured Skinth Shields are leaving the shop, destined for fix-it adventures.

DSC_7520

The M, L and XL Shields are among the most popular models, the main reason being they fit the most popular tools. The M and L fit 4″ multitools (shown in the M-Shield, a Leatheman Wave and in the L-Shield, a Leatherman Charge TTi). The XL-Shield shown here with a Leatherman Surge.  DSC_7521

The L and XL even have a perfect, bottom less, front slot for a flat one-piece tool or a Leatherman Bit Kit.
DSC_7522

As with all Skinth Shields, these Smoke Shields close with reliable button snaps and have integrated belt clips.

Sunday Prototype – 04/07/13 – Old School and New School

We have a very special edition of the Skinth Sunday Prototype this week. Unlike any other week where we look at a new colour or a model, we are taking a trip down memory and pull a retrospective on one of our favourites, the Skinth Command Post.

The Skinth Command Post was a response to a Skinth user that wanted to carry a top coil notebook, a cell phone, a couple of writing instruments and sometimes a keychain tool.

What we have is the FIRST ever Skinth Command Post ever made next to it’s replacement.

DSC_7602

Worn everyday for a year, travelled to 3 countries and seen more calls than that pizza place down the street, this Command Post was a little rough around the edges, but it did the job.
DSC_7603

It’s replacement is a finely tuned belt pouch with some upgraded features. Laser cut 1000D CORDURA, integrated PentaPocket organization, magnetic snap and steel belt clip round out the new kid on the block.

DSC_7604

This first gen CP had some different techniques applied to it and those lessons have allowed the Command Post to become a very function, low profile piece of kit. DSC_7605

The back slot remains to be the same, holding snug a 3×5 note pad. Sometimes pen to paper is still quicker. DSC_7606

This particular user had no need for the enlarged tubes, so the foot print is a bit smaller than the normal Command Post.
DSC_7607

For quick access, an iPhone4 can be slipped into the notebook slot.

DSC_7608

We are very happy to see the Command Post come so far, help so many people stay organized and above all, be part of someone’s EDC. In the end, having changed someone’s workflow for the better is always the most satisfying part of our job.

Sunday Prototype – 04/14/13 – Navy Skinth XL

We’ve been looking towards our currently line up and seeing which ones are lacking attention.  Having simliar design characteristics and construction method to the Skinth OG, the Skinth XL is merely a extra large version. However, it is a sweet spot for those who want to carry a bit more kit on their belt. Not too large, not too small, the Skinth XL is not just a bigger brother.

This week, we are again featuring an underused color, Navy Blue. This Navy Blue Skinth XL is outfitted with outside access knife straps, perfect for this Spyderco Sage 3.

DSC_7614

On the back side, a standard belt loop is capped off by a pair of velcro opening horizontal straps. DSC_7617

Nested inside is a Leatherman OHT, one of Leatherman’s newest offerings for a full sized too not to mention their first crack at a out the front plier style tool.
DSC_7618

Accompanying the OHT is a Leatherman AA flashlight, a medium sized pill case and sandwiched in the front is a Leatherman Piranha one piece multitool.

DSC_7619

We recently reached 3000 likes on Facebook and we couldn’t be more excited. We’ll be annoucning a giveaway to celebrate this achievement and we will also be annoucing the winners of the 7, Thrunite Ti flashlights from March’s contest.

We’ll be hitting the machines hard this week to get orders out sooner than expect, hopefully this spells some rest for us…or more new products!

Like all our Skinth L-Shields, the standard 1.75″ steel belt clip allows for easy off and on, but staying put when you need it to.
DSC_7630

Hiding inside is a Leatherman Rebar, a 3″ crescent wrench and a titanium toothpick holder. DSC_7631

We are very excited to be part of this amazing line up of speakers, super high profile designers and CEOs of entrepreneurial companies.

Sunday Prototype – 04/28/13 – Chocolate Brown Jotter

Sometimes writing something down or making a quick sketch is the best way to capture ideas. We’ve never made a chocolate brown Jotter before and while our machines are churning out L-Shields for our upcoming attendance of the MAKE: Hardware Innovation Workshop, we thought it was the best time to showcase this example.

The Skinth Jotter maybe simple in design, but often the devil is in the details. Covered in elastic webbing, the Jotter can expand to carry a variety of tools and items. A handy pull handle allows the Jotter to be extracted from a bag or pocket easily.

DSC_7637

The elastic webbing on the backside of the Jotter can hold anything from a multitool, pens, flashlights and other tubular items.

DSC_7638

Behind the 1″ side release buckle is an iPhone and a Field Notes notebook.

DSC_7639

Just a friendly reminder that the Skinth shop will be temporarily closed when the Skinth staff is manning the booth from May 11-21. We are working double time to get orders shipped before we head out.

Watch out for more updates!

We’ve been on haitus!

It’s busy….a terrible problem. However, we are super proud to announce additions to the Skinth Shield line!

Introducing the Nano-Shield, the Micro-Shield and the MTT-Shield.

Ready to tackle your day to day with designer style, superior materials and workmanship and famous Skinth tailored fit.

DSC_8233 copy

The smallest ever Skinth, the Skinth Nano-Shield is designed around the Keyport and new up and coming Keyport Slide.

Not only is this a great way to carry your Keyport, the Nano-Shield can also be used to carry smaller items like lip balm, keychain sized tools and even some shorter AAA flashlights.

Made with the same One-Piece laser cut technology, the Nano-Shield maybe small, but it sure offers a whole lot.

 Nano Sh copy BR

We get demands for smaller and slimmer Skinths everyday and this is our answer.

The Skinth Micro-Shield is design around the Leatherman Juice line of multitools, form fitted for the slimmest and most durable carrying option available.

Coming standard with a robust 1.5″ steel belt clip, the Micro Shield can take a beating on your belt and still slide off at the end of the day.  Micro Sh copy copy

Since the recent launch of the Multitasker Tools Series 3, AR15 based Multitool, we’ve been getting emails about a carrying option beyond the standard onboard pocket clip.

The MTT-Shield (not to be confused with our MUT-Shield) is even wide enough for the 1/4″ bit kit the Series 3 ships with.

Not only does the MTT-Shield carry the Series 3, it can carry all of the generations of the Multitasker Tools AR15 MTs. MTT Sh copy BR

The new Nano, Micro and MTT-Shields are now ready to ordered for custom color selection.

Sunday Prototype – 06/23/13 – Updated Skinth First Responder II

Just a minor update on our Skinth First Responder pouch, we launched the FRII along side a few other items a little less than a year ago and since then it’s been a hot item for those who are in the industry or just wanting to keep a emergency supplies on hand.

DSC_8235

We recently evaluated the design and while it made sense for one of the side tubes to be inverted in the inception of the Skinth FR, the FRII introduced the option for the larger front pocket. The inverted side tube no longer had a purpose, so we turned a 180 and returned symmetry to the FRII.

DSC_8249

All the features are the same except for this one minor detail but we feel it warrants a Sunday Prototype! On this FRII, the large 2×4 pocket in front is great for large, light weight items like a few extra pairs of nitrile gloves.

DSC_8244

The H&K Style gate clip is still a standard feature on the FRII. The now symmetrical side tube pockets are 1″x3″ tall making them perfect for compact CR123 lights.

DSC_8240

The most notable and what makes the FRII unique from other Skinths is the integrated EMT Shear slot which is complete with a safety strap, closed with velcro.

DSC_8242

With a large 2.5″wide x 5″ tall x 1.5 thick main body is surrounded by our PentaPocket organization system, perfect for small, thin items that would normally get lost in pouches.
DSC_8245

Next week is a big week for us, we are launching a new product that will not only be helpful to those who work outdoors, but for those fix-it-yourself indoor types too!

Stay tuned and keep on carrying on!
